Hunger and Friendship

In the deep forests of Siberia, two fierce grizzlie bears were hunting. Their chief had sent them out to catch salmon for the tribe to eat. If they could not catch salmon, they would……would…….be killed!

Finally, after days of trekking, the grizzlies came to a river. And in the river there was a big, fat salmon! The salmon could have fed the tribe for weeks! But, the salmon looked so cute! And so the bears said: “Don’t worry! We won’t eat you!Just swim away!” And so, the salmon swam away.

“HOW DARE YOU!”  The chief growled when the two bears came home. “I WILL EXECUTE YOU TWO!”

And then on the ground, thousands of tears fell. The others bears said: “Don’t kill them! They might have a better catch next time!”

And so Chief Grizzlie said: “Fine Fine. But next time, you two would rise to heaven!”

Winter came. The tribe was hungry and weak.

The two bears feared that they could be killed by the chief. So, they decided to escape to the river and perhaps catch some salmon. And so, using their last bit of energy, they packed up some berries, fruit, and water, and prepared to start their exile.

They trekked over mountains, past lakes, and through forests until they arrived atthe river. The bears stood on top of a waterfall, waiting for a salmon to leap up.

And up came the big, fat salmon!

The salmon said: “I heard about your difficulties. Because you saved me, I will help you. I know a place called the Amur (Heilongjiang) region of China. There are vast grounds of forests there! The honey there is so sweet! There are large preys like deer! Go tell your chief and tribe to come. I will meet you here.”

The bears went back and said to the chief: “Sire, a really wise salmon will take us to a paradise called Amur.”

The chief said: “We are starving! let’s pack up and go, even if it kills us.”

So,they arrived at the waterfall ,licking their lips.

The salmon said: “Follow me!”

And so, they followed the salmon down the Amur river. When they got to the border of China and Russia, the chief said: “Let’s swim to the other side!”

“Okay!”everyone swam down in to the river.

When they got to the other side, it was really like how the salmon said. Bees buzzed around beehives as sweet smelling honey trickled out. The deer were silently eating grass and playing in the woods. The air was fresh and there were no humans around.

Chief Grizzlie said: “Thank you. You two saved all of us. If you obeyed me and killed the salmon, how would we know this wonderful place?”

The two grizzlies replied: “It was all because of the salmon. He saved us.”

And so, the bears would migrate to Amur every winter and return to Siberia in the summer. And because of that, they would never starve again and they lived happily ever after.
