小学生英语作文:关于蝗灾的思考

African Cricket Invasion

Lately, there has been a devastating cricket invasion in Africa, more specifically Kenya and the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia).

Multiple scenes of farmers looking up from their farmlands to see that a sea of crickets had transformed day to night in an instant. Then, comes the devastation, the crickets have started to feast. In the blink of an eye, the pests have consumed all of the healthy crops.

The unwanted crickets are part of a family called Acrididae, the species is the Pelerin crickets and these are the most destructive ones.

They reproduce rapidly, eat two grams per day and usually are not social creatures. This is not what makes them so damaging.

But when it is feeding time, they can sum up into a swarm of 50 to 100 billion crickets. One cloud of crickets can cover 1200 square kilometres, with 80 million insects per square kilometre.

In 1988, one particular swarm of crickets travelled more than 4800km in 10 days! More outstanding is that these insects have an impact on 1 out of 10 people on this very planet.

In the wake of more and more incidents occurred recently, I believe crops need proper protection from crickets to produce grains efficiently. It is an urgent matter and need a quick solution, otherwise we will be facing food shortage and hunger sooner than you think.

We can build a stable barrier around the cults to prevent cricket invasion or use pesticides to kill the crickets. It would be more manageable if money is not an issue for these options.

In the present, governments are trying to make pesticides more available to tackle the current crisis. These are short-term solution.

To ultimately solve the problem from its root cause, you might wonder why we have more cricket disasters in the first place.
To make it simpler in two words: Global Warming.

Extreme temperatures cause more cyclones, which in turn makes the climate more humid. A humid environment is suitable for crickets to live and reproduce.
Then what can we do to prevent Global Warming? Things we can do include decreasing the use of fossil fuel, coal and natural gases. This will take time as modern society is built and operates on the energies.
So, it is a long term goal. However, if we do not do anything now, our environment will keep on getting worse. There will be not only more crickets but also more hurricanes, tornados and typhoons.
Everyone has a share to prevent Global Warming and ultimately eliminate cricket invasion in the future.

Governments can gradually transition the society into clean-energy driven environment and research into new and efficient clean energies.

Manufacturing plants and corporations have their weight to lift too. They can invest in Research and Development to embrace innovative and efficient ways of doing things and improve recycling to reduce waste, for example, use the waste they are producing to make energy out of it.

As individuals, we can do our part and try to reduce emissions. More specifically, instead of driving a car, you can use public transportation. Rather than using a car that burns gasoline, you could buy an electronic car. You can also eat less beef and overall consume less meat.

All together, we will make a difference and have a brighter future, but we need to act now.
