Good afternoon, everyone! I’m Zhenglei,a teacher from Xiangshui Experimental School. Today, I’m going to share a novelnamed Pride and Prejudicewith you.
She was born on December 16, 1775, inSteventon, Hampshire, where her father, Rev.George Austen, was a rector. Shewas the second daughter and seventh child. She was mostly tutored at home, andirregularly at school, but she received a broader education than many women ofher time.Shestarted to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writingsdate from about 1787. After her father’s death, the family moved to Southamptonthen Chaton, and in Chaton she started to write her major works. She was nevermarried. Due to the poor health, she died on July 18, 1817 in Winchester andburied in Winchester Cathedral.
Austen’s main literary concern is abouthuman beings in their personal relationship. She is particular preoccupied withthe relationship between men and women in love. Stories of love and marriageprovide the major themes in all her novels, in which female characters arealways playing an active part.
Mr.Bennet isan English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He has five unmarrieddaughters .Mr. Bennet’s wife, a noisy and foolish woman. The sonof a wealthy, well-established family and the master of the great estate ofPemberley, Darcy is Elizabeth’s male counterpart. Mr. Bingley,Darcy’s wealthy best friend.Eli’s best frend ,who finally married to Mr .Collions.Eli’s elder male cousin ,who will come toHertfordshire to inherit the Bennet’s property by rules .He is a clergyman. Heis an officer . His father had been the steward (n.管家) of the Darcys.
Mr and MrsBennet live with their five daughters at Longbourn near London. Because theyhave no son, their property will have to pass, according to the law at thattime, to a cousin, William Collins. Hoping to secure their daughters’ positionin society, they both want to marry them to some wealthy gentlemen. It sohappens that Charles Bingley, a single man in possession of a good fortune, comes to settle in the neighborhood with his two sisters and his friendFitzwilliam Darcy, who is also rich and unmarried. Bingley and Jane fall inlove with each other almost at first sight. And Darcy is attracted to Jane’ssister Elizabeth, but he offends her by his insolent behavior and rude remarksat a ball. The dislike and repulsion is increased by the pride of the one andthe prejudice of the other.
However,Darcy continues to be attracted to her, in spite of himself, till he proposesto her but is rejected indignantly. Later on, on a trip to north of Englandwith her uncle and aunt, Elizabeth chances to meet Darcy, who receives themvery warmly and shows greatly improves manners. Thus pride is checked andprejudice removed. Just at this point, news reaches Elizabeth that her youngestsister Lydia has eloped with Wickham. By Darcy’s help, their marriage isfinally brought. And through his influence, the former tie between Bingley andJane is renewed, which leads to their engagement. Darcy and Elizabeth alsobecome engaged despite the intervention of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. The storythen ends happily with the marriages of Jane and Elizabeth.
It’s wrong toget married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it bewithout caring about those elements .Marriage should be regarded carefully because it isnot a game you could just enjoy without prudent (adj.谨慎的) consideration.
