I love reading in thelate afternoon. Pride and Prejudice is written by Jane Austen , a famousEnglish writer . I have read the book before. However, I truly find its charmas I read it again.
I still remember thefirst sentence in this book .It reads :"It is a truth well known to allthe world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in needof a wife ." The undertone is very clear : the foundation of the marriageat that time is not emotion but possession. Love seems to be a perpetual themeall the time .And the main story in the book Pride and Prejudice is not aexception .The writer tells us her views and attitudes about love and marriagein this book.
The novel mainly tells usa story between Elizabath and Mr. Darcy. It is at a ball that Elizabeth meetsMr. Darcy for the first time and his pride and supercilious behaviors has leftElizabeth a terrible impression . This is the reason why Elizabeth's prejudicetowards him begins .Besides this reason, there are two other incidentsstrengthens Elizabeth's prejudice .The first is that Wickham speaks ill of Mr.Darcy, which makes Elizabeth thinks him is unworthy to making acquaince of. Thesecond is that Elizabeth thinks Darcy is the person who separates her sisterJane and Mr. Bingley. But with the plots developing, Darcy has changed himselfand become no longer proud ,he also helps Jane and Bingley's reunion. All thesefactors change Elizabeth's attitude towards Darcy. Eventually, Elizabeth andDarcy become a couple and lead a happy life from then on.
Many people simply regardPride and Prejudice as a love story, but inmy opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. Sheperfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time andgave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their ownpersonalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off herdaughters. Mr.Bingley is a friendly young man,but hisfriend Mr. Darcy is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Eventhe five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks ill of others. Elizabeth is a clever girlwho always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. Kitty doesn’thave her own opinion but likes to follow her sister Lydia. Lydia is a girl whofollows exotic things, handsome man,and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book,I can always find the same personalities in the society now.
Books as the name implies, pride andprejudice, and in the book is male leading the obstacle of the love, but in thereal society is also a communication barriers between people, but also in theright attitude towards themselves, treat things in a stumbling block. In reallife, we have to overcome the "pride and prejudice", take theinitiative to understand others. Each person actually are easy to be driven bytheir own subjective impression, and therefore easy to incorrect comment onother people, thus caused the misunderstanding between each other. A man givefirst impression is can affect many things, but not must not change, want tohave a deeper understanding, in order to have a more objective point argument, just like the heroine of the story of darcy's view, is because understandingjust change. The book reaction of social reality is so hit the nail on thehead.
After reading this novel,I realize the author Jane Austen’s attitudes and views towards love andmarriage: is unpractical to get married just for property, wealth and socialstatus while would it be without caring about these elements. Marriage shouldbe based on a real love and it is not a game! You can not just enjoy it withoutprudent considerations. There is a gap which is called pride and prejudicebetween Elizabeth and Darcy , for they possess different society status andamount of property. But the ending which the author arranges that Elizabeth andDarcy break all the obstacles and become a love couple suggests that truth doesexist no matter how different the background ,the status is .And I think thisbook will arouse people’s awareness of the importance of true love in amarriage.
My point of view towardsthe masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English humansentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under thecircumstance of conservative, and tells us thedifferent ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s fivedaughters. Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that islove and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid without considering all of these.
That is why I think this book is indeedthe representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.
